Thoughts on Spring
& four things I'm buying secondhand
Rabbit, rabbit it’s the first of the month, and Spring is on the horizon!
My birthday has always fallen on or near the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Growing up in the Midwest, I could never predict if the day would offer a snowstorm, or be warm enough to lay outside in my backyard. One thing was certain, I could rely on the fresh energy of a burgeoning season. It always feels like my “new year,” and I welcome the arrival of this day. I love to see green bursting from the ground, and delayed sunsets are forever my mood booster.
All this aside, my equilibrium is confused by the recent warm weather. I feel like a sprouting tulip that has no comprehension it’s not supposed to be 74 degrees in February. The very real effects of climate change have me worried, but simultaneously I can’t deny my interest in spring cleaning, walking outside, and opening the windows.
It’s also expedited my desire to cherry-pick new pieces for my wardrobe. Due to fleeting trends, I always challenge myself to shop seasonal “it items” second-hand.
Here are four things I’ve purchased for this very early spring awakening.
Colorful Leather Jackets:
I saw a red leather jacket styled with baggy denim & ballet flats and immediately dove into Poshmark. I ended up finding the red one above for thirty-six dollars, and although it brought me flashbacks of the “Thriller” music video, I’m looking forward to styling it. My recommendation is to use keywords like “boxy leather” and “oversized fit.” I adore the butter-yellow leather alongside it. I purchased this via a local vintage dealer Melissa Davis. Their IG is openprofile.us.
Lacey Motifs
I want peeking lace all spring & summer. I plan to style these pieces with oversized blazers and t-shirts. Here is a skirt with endless possibilities. Easy and breezy.
Rugby Shirts
I didn’t end up purchasing the green & white one, and I REGRET it. I found another similar one on Etsy and searched for “vintage rugby.” I aimed for an oversized fit here. If you’re second-hand shopping, always have your measurements handy. I love the colors on this one.
Bulbous Belts
I don’t own enough belts. I wanted a bulbous, silver buckle situation, which was shockingly hard to find. After endless scrolling, a few great options popped up on Poshmark. I searched “black belt, silver bulbous buckle.” Here is another one I love.
I’ve discovered that when it comes to secondhand shopping, the more specific you can articulate what you’re looking for, the better. I generally explore Etsy, Poshmark, Depop, TRR, and eBay. If you haven’t downloaded the GEM app, it allows you to search all of these at once… it’s an actual gem (no gatekeeping here).
Purchasing items secondhand can be overwhelming, but it’s undoubtedly a great way to avoid breaking the bank on a seasonal trend. For now, this is satiating my Spring appetite, but don’t worry, I will not be putting away my winter coats because we all know very well, that April is the cruelest month… and it’s only March.
